We’ve all heard of the University City of Cambridge, and if you’re on a trip in London for some time, we highly suggest taking a day trip to Cambridge… If we’re really honest, it’s best visited in the warmer months so you can take advantage of the river and outdoor bars alongside. If you get the fast train from King’s Cross, you can get to Cambridge in as little as 46mins! Perfect if you’re staying with us at The Rosebery.

Getting there

As mentioned above, you can get there in as little as 46 minutes on the train from King’s Cross! If you fancy a drive, it’ll take you just under 2 hours, and if you travel via coach (the cheapest option from £12 return) the fastest option is a 2 hour trip. You can hop on the coach at the following locations: London Victoria, London Embankment, London Mile End and London Stratford. Please check thoroughly for the departure times and places.

What to do and see

Cambridge University, of course, did you know that it was founded in 1209? Cambridge is steeped in history as the second oldest university in the English-speaking world AND the world’s third oldest surviving university! The university is open to visitors, please check this guide for more information.

See the city on a bicycle; Cambridge has many cycle paths, making it very easy to get around on 2 wheels and many people do! Take one of the brilliant bicycle tours to explore further afield and get off the beaten track.

If you like afternoon tea, you must check out Harriet’s Cafe Tearooms. Located on a cobbled street it’s quintessentially British, without the stuffiness of the higher end establishments. The sandwiches and scones are excellent and the service is great too! On some afternoons there is a live pianist, which provides a lovely atmosphere.

Punting on the River Cam is the main attraction and the best tour is provided by Scudamore’s who have been proving the punting service along the river since the early 20th century! With many options from ‘Bat safari’ to punt hire, there’s an option for all. Open all year round from 9:00am to dusk (dusk will be a lot earlier in the winter months so please check before booking). This is a perfect activity for a nice summer’s day or even a special occasion.

King’s College Chapel is high on the visitor’s list. Another historical attraction in Cambridge, it is thought to be one of the finest examples of late perpendicular Gothic English architecture. Built in successions between 1446 and 1536 it is still used today and is home to the King’s College Choir.

If you have a little extra time, visit Grantchester which is a popular retreat from the busier town of Cambridge, at just 2.5 miles along the river. Walking tours are held from Cambridge to Grantchester along the banks of the river, which is great for those who like some outdoor adventure.

Hopefully, we have given you enough of an excuse to visit this great city, with easy access from Central London there is no reason why this trip should be missed! Again, the activities listed above are our suggestions and there is plenty more to do in Cambridge if you have other sights you would like to see there. Check back in next week to see what Oxford has to offer!
