The Kent Coast: A Stunning Stretch of Seaside Near London
Follow the River Thames eastward by train or car and you’ll soon end up in one of the most exciting stretches of the UK. The Kent coastline has been gifted with an enormous regeneration effort in recent times and represents a fantastic day trip away during your stay in London.
From the beaches of Margate to the natural green splendour of the Isle of Sheppey, here is our comprehensive guide to one of the best stretches of seaside near London.
Elmley National Nature Reserve – Stunning Wildlife One Hour from London
The first stop on the coastline trail is the small island of Sheppey, renowned for its superb nature spots. We could create an A to Z of great wildlife you can see in the reserve, but just to give you a taster we spotted some hares, lapwings, avocets, barn owls, and even some marsh harriers. There’s a great cast of creatures all the year round, so it’s well worth a visit whenever you come to stay in London.
Whitstable – A Beautiful Bohemian Seaside Town
Next along is the lesser known yet charming town of Whitstable. Not to be missed by the foodies amongst you, Whitstable is home to numerous classic pub-restaurants, serving fresh local food right by the sea. And for the history lovers out there, the eighteenth-century Whitstable Castle and the Community Museum also make for a great afternoon of culture.
Margate – For a Family-Friendly Day Trip Near London
Perhaps our favourite stop along the entire trail, Margate is a dream spot for a family outing by the sea. As well as its quaint and colourful seafront, the town contains a bustling amusement park, Dreamland, filled with helter-skelters, rollercoasters, and – of course – candyfloss stalls.
If you’re able to prise yourself away from the seafront, we also recommend the Old Kent Market. It’s hard to miss the bright red exterior, and the interior is just as eye-catching, complete with a dainty old-fashioned bar and a modern vegan food stall.
Ramsgate – A Historic Coastal Town
One of the more traditional towns along the coast, Ramsgate has been a big leisure hotspot since the completion of its harbour in the mid-nineteenth century. The town has since been regenerated many times over and now boasts an abundance of colourful architecture and unmissable food spots. The last stop on our trail, this is the perfect place to watch the sun set on the horizon and enjoy a well-earned tipple.
